WHAT IS HATHA YOGA?

Hatha Yoga is the origin from which all yoga styles were derived.  It is a very widely-practiced and interpreted style of yoga, which can be used to describe any series of yoga asanas.  The Sanskrit word "asana" was traditionally defined as a "comfortable seated position", however, the term is more modernly used now to describe any physical form of yoga.  Hatha is known as very gentle style, but is openly adaptable to each teacher's style. 

 

ORIGIN OF HATHA

The Sanskrit word "Hatha" literally means "Sun-Moon" ("Ha=Sun", "Tha-Moon") symbolizing balance and opposing parts of the physical body - ie. front, back, left, right, top, bottom.  

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A CLASS?

Hatha Yoga is gentle, free-flowing, and great for the whole array of experience levels.  It is suited for beginner yogis but also for those with prior yoga knowledge and experience.  Classes bridge the elements of the body through postures, the breath through technique, and mindfulness surrounding the combined practices.  If your goal is to achieve a healthier body and a clearer, more peaceful mind - Hatha is a great style for you.  There are nearly 200 hatha yoga postures which aid in supporting the spine, promoting circulation in all organs, glands, and tissues, and stretching and aligning the body for better balance and flexibility.

WHO SHOULD GO TO A CLASS?

Anyone and everyone!  All experience levels are encouraged to go to this class.  Much as each of us has our own individual goals outside of yoga, the same is to be said within the yoga practice.  For those who are experienced, it can provide a meditative and therapeutic experience; for those who are new to yoga, it provides a slow and gentle ease into the practice; for those who are athletes, it provides a form a therapy for the body; and for those who are new to a fitness regime, it provides a opportunity to get into better health and wellness.  Whichever of these body types you are - there is no doubt that you will benefit from this practice.   Come.  Feel nourished in your Body, Mind, and Soul.
